The band saw machine is an electrically powered machine that can cut various materials such as wood and metals. It can cut straight lines, curves, shapes and circles on these materials. Band saws can cut through wood and is used to cut timber and for ripping lumber. It can also be used to cut metals and makes use of friction to cut through hard metals. While cutting through metals, heat is generated and chips may get entangled within the blades. The metal cooling system present in the cutting blades helps the band saw to take care of these issues. Band saws are used to cut down various types of metals to smaller sizes and also to make intricate designs such as curves, circles, straight lines and other shapes.
Types of Band Saw Machines
There are two types of band saw machines that are capable of doing such cutting works on materials like metals. The metals may vary as aluminum, bronze, brass, steel, tungsten steel, etc.  They are horizontal band saws and the vertical band saws.

Horizontal Band Saws
The horizontal band saws are used to hold the material for cutting in a firm position, as there is much vibration caused when the blades move up and down, while making the cut. These types of band saws help to cut down the stock to various smaller sizes and also help to make a thick or a thin cut depending on the requirement. When large pieces of metal are cut to length, these horizontal metal saws are used. Large manufacturing companies that require cutting of various metals such as plastic, titanium, graphite and soft metals make use of this type of band saws. They are small in size so that the work material can be held in place while cutting. They do not vibrate much while cutting and give a smooth finish due to the firm hold of the material, thereby reducing wastage of the material cut. They are very precise and accurate in their work and are hence used in large timber yards, to make cuts according to measurements. The horizontal band saw machines are also used by metal fabricators. Cutting of precious metals such as gold, silver, copper and bronze is also made easy, with horizontal band saw machines. The horizontal band saws are ideal for those who have regular work that is routine in nature to cut the materials.

Vertical Band Saws
The vertical band saws make use of saw blades for cutting metals. The materials are cut by holding them securely and are moved systematically. They are usually for home use and for hobbyists. The circular blades help to make complicated cuts. They are inbuilt with a welder to repair broken blades and also for interior cutting too. The blades are cooled with a blower and to keep the chips away from the materials being cut. As the band saw remains stationary while the work piece is fed to the blade, many types of styles and cuts can be made. They are best used to make small cuts and specialty cuts as well as for polishing and filing work. Various types of complicated cuts can be made with these machines and shapes and angles of different sizes can be cut according to the need of the user. They help in cutting as well as welding work with their inbuilt welder.
The Difference between the Horizontal and Vertical Band Saw Machines
The horizontal band saws are used to cut large pieces of material and can cut through very hard materials too. However they cannot cut curves or other complicated shapes that require intricate patterns and designs. The vertical band saws are used to cut small pieces of pliable and soft metals and can cut curves, circles and other shapes. Hence, horizontal saws require powerful motors to cut, while the vertical saws do not require much power. One important feature that is different between the two is the movement of the cut. The horizontal band saw makes the blade move towards the material to make the cut, while the vertical band saw moves the metal is moved towards the blade to make the cut. Horizontal band saws are larger in size and make large sized cuts that are not ideal for small workshops and are hence used in big industries and large manufacturing companies, timber yards and by metal fabricators. The vertical band saws are much softer and are used in homes and workshops. The horizontal band saws work with less vibration and hence, do not create much dust. They can be used to cut all types of materials such as wood, plastic and on metal. They can be left to work automatically and the user can continue with his work elsewhere, while the machine keeps on with its work. However, the vertical band saw needs to be used with more care and safety, as the work piece has to be fed into the blade which involves risky work due to the intricate work that has to be done. The materials cannot be clamped on to the sides of the stock to keep it stable, which is a facility that is available with the horizontal blade saw.
The horizontal band saws can handle huge workloads and is most useful for cutting lumber and for ripping and are suitable for industrial work. However, the vertical band saws are more suitable for small works and as they are more economical in prices, they are the best choice for home use and for small workshops. The horizontal band saw is the equipment that has its own unique way of functioning and serves its own purpose. Hence, the user should purchase the right equipment that is most suitable for work, while selecting the tool for his workshop. Requirement of work and budget are the chief features that are most essential to choose the best equipment to own.
